What Makes Up a Dab Rig?

What Makes Up a Dab Rig?

When you were first introduced to smoking weed or any other type of cannabis product, you typically were smoking it out of a shared bowl with friends or a small joint that you each could only take a puff or two off of. This is the most common way that people start smoking weed since when you’re younger, it can be hard to get your hands on it and it’s seen as a social activity to do with a group of friends.

As you get more into the act of smoking, you typically start to try new things. You become more advanced with your smoking and eventually, you start to branch out with the types of ways you smoke; straying from the typical ways of sharing a bowl with your friends or trying to roll that joint with the last of your weed.

You might stray out into things like bongs or water pipes made from borosilicate glass, you know, the fancy stuff you can find at the nice head shop downtown. Once you’ve become pretty advanced and you’re looking for a more intense high, this might be the time you start venturing out into dabs.

Otherwise known as shatter, crumble, wax, sauce, or resin, dabs are highly concentrated forms of THC that get even the biggest stoners super high. This is why long-time smokers switch from regular weed to dabs if they feel the need to feel a stronger high. Dabs can be found at any dispensary, so it’s not like you have to search high and low for them.

However, to smoke these resin waxes, you can’t just stuff them into the bowl of a bong and expect it to work. You need a special kind of rig, called an oil rig or a dab rig, to get the job done. While this kind of smoking device may seem a bit foreign, it’s necessary to get the best overall dabbing experience.

The Pieces of a Dab Rig
While there are some types of fancy rigs that have extra components to them for that added extra bit of flare, most of these rigs are similar in how they are made up. They usually all come with similar pieces. Here’s a breakdown of what you can find on a typical dab rig.

●Bong or water pipe
○Without this piece, then you wouldn’t really have a rig for dabs. Just like a standard bong or water, this part of the rig acts very similarly. The bong is typically filled with water, like a regular water bong, so the dab vapor can have a little chance to cool down before it’s inhaled. This also slightly cleans and filters out the vapors so you have a great dab hit that won’t burn your throat or hurt your lungs.

●Quartz Banger or Titanium Nail
○Now, this piece of the rig is what makes it a dab rig. This is the part that is unique to this kind of smoking device, as the nail or banger gets heated to high temperatures. It’s the actual piece of the rig that turns the dabbing concentrate into vapor for you to inhale. Typically, you will find rigs with nails that are made with titanium, quartz, or another type of metal.

The banger must be made with a material that should be able to be reheated at high temperatures over a long period of time. Bangers are most commonly made with quartz and resemble a small bowl-like structure. The nail is just a long thin piece of metal that slightly sticks out. Whatever you choose to use is up to you, as they both work the same.

○To heat the nail or the banger to the correct temperature, you’re going to need a high-powered torch. Usually, you can find a torch that runs off butane or propane and those will do fine. For safety reasons, we suggest using a handheld torch because they can get the job done just as well.

●Tool for Dabs
○These tools are essential to the entire act of dabbing. Usually, dabbing tools resemble long pieces of metal that are used to help pick up and place the dabbing concentrate onto the nail for it to be vaporized. Dab concentrates are extremely sticky and hard to handle and you can risk seriously burning yourself if you do this process without a dabbing tool.

All in all, once you get the hang of it, these rigs can be as simple to use as a bong or a water pipe. This special design is specifically made to be used for resins and dab concentrates, so you must choose wisely when picking one out to use for the first time.
